Common Artificial Turf Defects, Root Causes & Professional Fixes
Jul 07, 2026
1. Surface Deformation & Structural Instability
Symptoms: Turf wrinkling, bulging, edge lifting, joint cracks and substrate settlement, causing uneven surfaces and trip hazards.
Causes: Unlevel substrate, insufficient expansion gaps, uneven stretching, poor seam bonding and long-term concentrated loads.
Solutions: Re-stretch and fasten loose turf; re-bond cracked joints with certified adhesive and tape; level and compact sunken substrate; reconstruct damaged cushion layers for severe issues.
Prevention: Control substrate flatness within 3mm; reserve standard expansion gaps; standardize seam installation and perimeter fixation; avoid sustained heavy loads.

2. Discoloration & Fiber Degradation
Symptoms: Fading, uneven discoloration, fiber lodging, abrasion and shedding, ruining aesthetics and field performance.
Causes: Non-UV-stabilized turf, mixed production batches, solar aging, insufficient infill support and high-traffic friction.
Solutions: Clean oxidized surfaces; groom flattened fibers; patch damaged areas with matched-spec turf; conduct full resurfacing for widespread aging.

Prevention: Use UV-resistant virgin-material turf with strong backing; install single-batch products only; perform regular field grooming.
3. Poor Drainage & Microbial Contamination
Symptoms: Standing water, damp substrate, moss growth and mildew odors, triggering microbial risks and accelerated turf aging.
Causes: Unqualified drainage slope, blocked pores, compacted infill, organic residue buildup and inadequate post-rain maintenance.
Solutions: Dredge drainage pores and aerate compacted infill; optimize field drainage systems; pressure-clean and apply antimicrobial treatments; replace severely contaminated infill and geotextile.
Prevention: Build 3‰–5‰ standard drainage slopes; remove debris timely; conduct seasonal deep sanitation to keep turf dry and ventilated.
4. Infill Compaction & Performance Degradation
Symptoms: Infill loss, uneven distribution and hard compaction, reducing shock absorption, elasticity and sports performance.
Causes: Wind/rain erosion, long-term treading, lack of aeration and low-quality impure infill materials.
Solutions: Level turf and replenish standard infill; aerate and loosen compacted layers; fully replace degraded contaminated infill.
Prevention: Adopt high-purity graded infill; conduct quarterly aeration and infill top-ups; inspect fields after extreme weather.
5. Overheating & Stubborn Surface Fouling
Symptoms: Excessive summer surface heat limiting usability; stubborn oil, adhesive and sediment stains damaging aesthetics and permeability.
Causes: High heat absorption of dark dense turf, poor thermal dissipation and untreated construction/man-made pollutants.
Solutions: Apply water cooling in hot weather; remove adhesive residues via cryogenic treatment; clean oil stains with neutral professional detergents.
Prevention: Prefer light-colored, high-porosity low-heat turf; complete thorough post-construction cleaning; remove stains promptly.
