Backing Glue: The Core Factor Determining Artificial Grass Service Life And Environmental Performance
Jun 23, 2026
In the artificial turf industry, most buyers and customers tend to focus intuitively on grass fiber appearance, height, and texture, while ignoring the most critical invisible core component - the turf backing glue. As the fundamental "skeleton" of artificial grass, the backing glue firmly locks grass fibers to the primary backing, resisting long-term ultraviolet radiation, extreme temperature changes, frequent trampling, and rain erosion. It is no exaggeration to say that the type and quality of backing glue directly decide the service life, structural stability, safety, and environmental performance of artificial turf. In the current fiercely competitive artificial grass market, backing glue technology has become a key benchmark to distinguish low-end ordinary products from high-quality premium turf.

Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR) latex is the most traditional and cost-effective backing material, dominating the mid-to-low-end artificial turf market for decades. With stable basic adhesion and extremely low production costs, SBR backing is widely applied in ordinary landscape turf, residential courtyard decoration, and low-frequency leisure venues. Its outstanding advantage lies in cost control, making it the best choice for customers with limited budgets and low usage intensity. However, the inherent defects of SBR glue restrict its application in high-standard scenarios. It features poor weather resistance and aging resistance: it becomes brittle and prone to cracking in low-temperature environments, and tends to powder, fade and lose adhesion under long-term high temperature and strong sunlight exposure. In addition, traditional SBR backing contains trace volatile organic compounds (VOCs), producing slight peculiar smells, and its average service life is only 5 to 8 years, failing to meet the long-term and safe use requirements of professional sports venues and public facilities.
To solve the performance bottlenecks of SBR backing, polyurethane (PU) backing has gradually become the mainstream material for high-end artificial turf and has now become the industry's high-standard recognition benchmark. More than 60% of FIFA-certified professional football fields and school sports grounds worldwide adopt high-performance PU backing. Compared with SBR latex, PU backing has a denser molecular cross-linking structure, bringing extremely superior comprehensive performance. It achieves ultra-high peel strength, effectively preventing grass fibers from falling off even under high-intensity sports trampling and frequent friction. In terms of weather resistance, PU backing can adapt to extreme temperatures ranging from -30°C to 70°C, maintaining stable flexibility and structural toughness without cracking or softening.
More importantly, PU backing is the most environmentally friendly adhesive material in the current artificial grass industry. It contains no formaldehyde, benzene substances or harmful volatile components, fully complying with EU REACH, RoHS and other international environmental protection standards. It is odorless, non-toxic, and safe for children and pets to contact directly. The service life of PU-backed artificial turf can reach 8 to 10 years, greatly reducing later maintenance and replacement costs. The only shortcoming of PU backing is its relatively high production cost, which makes it mainly applied in high-end scenarios such as professional sports fields, campus playgrounds, and high-grade commercial landscapes.
Natural latex backing serves as a transitional and balanced option between SBR and PU materials. It has better flexibility and environmental friendliness than SBR latex with a milder odor, and delivers excellent drainage performance, suitable for temperate climate areas and low-intensity landscape and leisure venues. Nevertheless, natural latex has obvious limitations: its anti-aging performance is weak, and it is easy to turn yellow and brittle after long-term ultraviolet irradiation. Meanwhile, its raw material price is greatly affected by the global rubber market, leading to unstable costs and insufficient batch stability, so it cannot be popularized in large-scale high-standard projects.
With the upgrading of global environmental protection policies and diversified market demands, the artificial grass industry is constantly iterating new composite backing glue technologies. Modified composite backing combining PU and environmental latex materials perfectly balances cost, performance and environmental protection. In addition, bio-based environmentally friendly backing has become a new industry development trend. By adding degradable plant-based raw materials, it further reduces carbon emissions, realizing green production and recyclability, which caters to the global low-carbon and environmental development concept.

In summary, backing glue is the hidden core competitiveness of artificial turf products. For purchasers and end users, selecting suitable backing glue according to application scenarios is the key to cost-effective procurement. Ordinary landscape decoration and civilian courtyard use can choose cost-effective SBR backing; public facilities such as communities and kindergartens prioritize environmentally friendly composite backing; professional sports venues and high-end engineering projects must adopt high-performance PU backing to ensure long-term stability, safety and durability. In the future, with the continuous innovation of adhesive technology, environmentally friendly, high-strength and long-life backing materials will further promote the high-quality upgrading of the global artificial grass industry.
